Exercise Book – Page Layouts

After looking through numerous fitness books that were filled with exercises to help people get into shape, I had the idea to create my own. What inspired this idea? It was mainly because all the illustrations or photos in these books are quite boring. They are somewhat good at demonstrating the exercises, but they lack fun.

Here are a few pages I did for my exercise book featuring my character Dimitri, the Strongest Man in the World, demonstrating some exercises with free weights.

With Dimitri, I decided to go with the classic Circus Strongman look rather than a modern Gym Meathead look. Just because it’s a timeless and fun look. Also that moustache is very fun to draw.

Punk Girl – The Whole Process

“I don’t attitude problem, I simply have a personality that you can’t handle.”

This illustration is a prime example of me reworking an image over and over again in Photoshop. As you can see here how the starting inked drawing is pretty different from the final image. As I was adding to colour in the illustration, I was just not happy how her face looked. No matter how many times I reworked the eyes, I felt that the eyes and the smile didn’t work.

So I decided to completely redraw her face through Photoshop. Instead having a big grinning Joker like face, I reworked her to having a rather unamused expression. I think the unimpressed expression works quite well.

Darth Maul – The Dark Apprentice of the Sith

My illustrations of the Star Wars’ character, Darth Maul!

For those of you who don’t know who this is, Darth Maul made his first appearance in the movie ‘Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace’ and was the apprentice of the main villain of the movie, Darth Sidious. Like the illustration I did of Darth Vader, I decided to make Darth Maul an absolute unit, so that’s why he looks cartoony buff.

While adding colour to the illustration, I wasn’t happy how Darth Maul’s original costume looked. Since his outfit was just black, I thought it looked rather… well, boring. So I decided to remove his black under layer and allow Maul to show off his massive arms and chest.

In the Star Wars universe, Darth Maul has back tattoos all over this chest and arms, not just his face and neck, but when I added the tattoos it made the illustration far too busy.

I will do another illustration of Darth Maul in the future, because I really want to do him in a costume that I think will suit him better.

I Am Iron Man!

A doodle of the Marvel Comics’ most popular character, Iron Man! I decided to draw Tony Stark in an oversized armour. I had the idea of having a little electromagnetic fire in front of the arc reactor, just to show how healthy the energy levels are. The bigger and brighter the flame, the better the energy levels. I also like having the armour shake, gives the ultra high armour a bit of a low tech feel to it.

World of Warcraft – Cosplay Girl!

Here’s an illustration of girl dressed up of her World of Warcraft character, Nesty. Since this is a drawing of someone playing Cosplay, I like the idea of trying to make costume as low budget as possible. This is why there are patches on the skin, to show where the skin make up has rubbed off, a zip on the top and why our young lady is wearing trainers.

Smiling Horror

Smiling Horror! A bunch of sketches of famous Horror Film characters, Pinhead, Jason and Alien, but drawn in a rather goofy way. I like the idea of making these scary and horrific characters funny and approachable.

Dimitri, The Strongest Man in the World Concept Design

This is the design for my character, Dimitri, the Strongest Man in the World! I created Dimitri when I was asked to diagram some exercises for a chap, so he wouldn’t forget how to perform them when following his workout programme. After sketching up some basic exercise diagrams, I decided to create something a bit more fun, thus Dimitri was born. I thought having a traditional Circus Strongman demonstrate basic dumbbell exercises would be a lot of fun. I’ll also have Dimitri take to the reader while he is demonstrating the exercises too.

Red Guardian

Here is Marvel Comics’ Russian Super Solider, The Red Guardian. For this illustration I did a combination of using the costume found in the comics, but giving him the body shape from ‘The Black Widow’ movie. I just liked the idea of this super hero character who has let himself go a bit and gained a “bit” of a gut.

Lady Loki

An illustration of the Marvel’s trickster God character, Loki, but this time the female version as seen in some 2008 Marvel comics and the 2021 Loki TV series. This illustration was done for my friend, Ray Ray, as she is a massive Loki fan, so I did a drawing of her as Lady Loki. This is why this version of Lady Loki has red hair, same as Ray Ray’s, although I think the red hair works much better against the green than the black hair or blonde hair does.

Work In Progress: New Iron Man Armour Design

This is me just messing around with Marvel’s Iron Man Armour design. I had the idea of making the armour more like a robot, so the person inside the armour would operate it like a biped tank. This is illustration is me just working out the colours and seeing how the armour will look, there will be more finished and I’ll be demonstrating the size as well. But I do like it’s round size, it very much opposite to what we expect from an Iron Man armour.

Instagram Vs. Reality: The Lifeguard Edition

The whole “Instagram Vs. Reality” joke always makes me chuckle. For those who are unfamiliar with the “Instagram Vs. Reality” gag, it’s when a photo of a person or event is taken and then highly polished and highly edited so it looks too good to be true. Then that photo is compared to a photo of the actual reality of the person or event for both laughs and to prove how fake Social Media can be.

So this is the Lifeguard edition of that gag and since I used to work at the Leisure Centre, I know that Lifeguards that appear on Baywatch are pure fantasy.

When I Grow Up I Want To Be Godzilla!

These illustrations are of my friend, Shereen, dressed up as a little Kaiju monster. Kaiju being a Japanese word for giant monster, like Godzilla. I would like to return to these illustrations and try to demonstrate the massive size of Shereen-zilla. I did some tests by adding some basic blocks for buildings to see how it would look like to have Shereen stomp her way through Down Town Tokyo.

I think there is a nice little Juxtaposition of having a cute monster causing such destruction.

Fat Man and Little Boy

Two Henchmen concept character designs I created for a comic idea I had a while ago. Fat Man and Little Boy, named after the two Atomic Bombs used in World War II, are the muscle for the two sisters who run the gang known as the Nukes. There is a lot of tweaking and redesigning I want to do to these characters, but one thing I do like is Fat Man’s power pack where he uses two oversized Duracell batteries to power up his Electro Knuckle Dusters.

Princess Leia

A couple of illustrations of everyone’s favourite Princess of the stars, Leia. The first image of Leia is actually for a friend of mine who is massive Star Wars fan. So I decided to draw her as her favourite Star Wars character, this is why I drew some serious bangs on her.

Paint Splash Minion Wannabe

Here is an illustration I did for my cousin’s little girl. Since she loves Illumination Entertainment’s Minions, my cousin asked me if I could draw her daughter as a Minion. I thought I would try and be a bit more creative than drawing her as a massive yellow ‘Tic Tac’ mint, so I had the idea of her covering herself in yellow paint and splashing the paint all over the place. I can imagine this has happened to few parents.

A Girl’s Best Friend

To quote Christina Aguilera, “What a girl wants, what a girl needs is cake!” Okay, they might not be exact lyrics to her hit song “What A Girl Wants” but I think she would agree with me. Here are a couple of illustrations based off of a friend of mine who will happily admit that Cake is her best friend.

Frog Knight Design

The concept design for my little Frog Knight character. I used the tree frog as the base model for my little Frog Knight because it doesn’t look to weird when I put him on his hind legs. His little armour does need a lot of work, for example, I don’t like his helmet, but I still love the idea and basic model of my little Frog Knight.

The Spectacular Spider-Ham

The breakaway star from the movie ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,’ it’s Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham! I did a fair bit of redesigning with this character, mainly because I felt his design in the comics and the movie wasn’t very Pig-like. So I made him way chubbier and gave him trotters.

Spider-Man

Marvel’s web slinging wonder, Spider-Man. For this illustration of Spider-Man, I decided to have a bit of fun with the costume, I added some elements from the first Amazing Spider-Man movie and changed the blue to black. The greatest thing about Spider-Man’s costume is there is no way you could ever beat the original design, so it’s always fun playing around with it.

Spooky Clown Scare Me!

As you can probably guess, this illustration is based off of the character Pennywise from the Stephen King book, It. I was looking at the 2017’s movie design for Pennywise and thought the costume was way too busy and fussy. So I decided to give him a basic clown outfit and completely limit the amount of colours I could use.

I like the goofy cartoon smile, makes him look funny, scary and weird all at the same time.

Disco Elysium’s Harry Du Bois

Here’s an illustration of the main character from ZA/UM’s role playing game, ‘Disco Elysium’, Mr. Harrier “Harry” Du Bois. This illustration was created using a combination of using pencil, pen and ink and Adobe Illustrator. I want to return to this character one day and make him much dirtier, since that fits his character much more.

Karate Kat

With the Netflix show, Cobra Kai, being a massive hit and entering it’s fourth season, I thought, “How can we make this TV spin of 80’s hit movie, The Karate Kid, even more popular?”

The answer, my friends, is simple. Add cats! So I present to you, The Karate Kat!
